Frequently asked questions

Is this legal in India? ⟩
Holding and transacting in Bitcoin is not explicitly illegal in India. However, the RBI does not recognise Bitcoin as legal tender. You are responsible for complying with Indian tax laws — crypto gains are taxed at 30% under Section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act, and a 1% TDS applies on transactions above ₹10,000 (or ₹50,000 for specified persons) under Section 194S. Always consult a CA for your specific situation.
What Lightning wallets are supported? ⟩
256D is designed to be wallet-agnostic. Any BOLT-11 or LNURL-compatible Lightning wallet should work — including Phoenix, Muun, Breez, Zeus, Wallet of Satoshi, and others. Full compatibility list coming soon.
What happens if a transaction fails mid-way? ⟩
This is an experimental product and failures can happen. If the Lightning payment is received but the UPI leg fails, 256D will attempt an automatic refund to the originating Lightning address. However, we cannot guarantee refunds in all cases. This is a key reason we advise starting with very small amounts.
How is the BTC/INR exchange rate determined? ⟩
The rate is fetched from aggregated market feeds at the time you initiate the transaction and is locked for a short window (typically 30–60 seconds) for you to complete the Lightning payment. The rate includes a small service fee which will be disclosed transparently before confirmation.
Is KYC required? ⟩
For very small experimental transactions during the beta phase, minimal verification may be sufficient. However, in compliance with applicable Indian regulations (including PMLA guidelines), higher-value usage will require KYC. Full details will be published in our Terms & Conditions before launch.
Do I need a bank account? ⟩
To spend Bitcoin via UPI, you only need a Lightning wallet loaded with sats — no bank account required on your end. To collect sats via UPI, you need a UPI-enabled Indian bank account for the payer's side, but the sats land directly in your Lightning wallet.
What are the transaction limits? ⟩
During the experimental phase, transaction limits will be kept intentionally low (e.g., ₹500–₹2,000 per transaction) to minimise risk exposure. Limits will be revised as the product matures and is audited. UPI itself has daily limits set by your bank (usually ₹1 lakh/day).
